Combined Tummy Tuck Liposuction Surgery Yield Low Complication Rates

Seattle Tummy Tuck Liposuction

Liposuction and tummy tuck surgery can and are more often performed at the same time than ever before, and results of a study (August, 2013) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery-Global Open®, the official open-access medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that combining the two procedures do not increase the risk of complications, and can even provide better results than performing the two procedures separately.

Performing a combined liposuction and abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck surgery), minimizes trauma to the affected tissues, which can improve results. There are also some modifications that can be used when performing the two procedures together than can benefit the patient, both in ease of recovery and satisfaction after the procedure.

One popular modification that improves outcomes from this combination of procedures is using total intravenous anesthesia without muscle paralysis, as opposed to general anesthesia. Patients recover from this method of sedation quicker than with more traditional anesthesia, have a lower risk of developing blood clots and experience less nausea.  Seattle plastic surgeon and multiple award-winning Dr. Shahram Salemy offers IV sedation as well as a spinal anesthetic and spinal blocks for select patients, which allow for a quicker recovery from surgery and a better post-operative experience than when general anesthesia is used.

The results of the recently released study point out that there are a variety of ways to achieve good results from tummy tuck surgery when combined with a liposuction. Depending on the patient, it may make sense to include liposuction as part of the procedure. Selecting a Board Certified plastic surgeon to help with the decision is important for best results. A Board Certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Salemy, will take the patient’s anatomy, medical history and goals into account when determining which procedure makes the most sense for the individual patient.

Dr. Salemy is a ABMS Board Certified plastic surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons who graduated from Yale University Medical School. He received a prestigious appointment as Clinical Instructor at The University of Washington’s Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery.
