BOTOX® Injection Is More Comfortable With Higher-Gauge Needles

Botox Cosmetics

The injection of Botox® has been found to be less painful using higher-gauge needles according to a study published in the online September 2015 issue of JAMA Dermatology. With the skyrocketing popularity of this non-surgical cosmetic procedure, improving patient satisfaction and quality of care is important.

Botox®, first approved by the FDA in 1989 to treat eye muscle disorders, has helped millions of people improve their aesthetic appeal and rejuvenate their faces. In 2014 alone, 6,673,608 Botox® procedures were completed, a 748% rise over the past 14 years. As the trend in Botox® use for cosmetics and rejuvenation continues, we can expect that there will be an ongoing focus in improving the patient experience during the procedure.

Board-certified Seattle Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Shahram Salemy, also adds, “At my clinic, we have always used higher-gauge (smaller) needles, despite the additional cost. Higher-gauge needles result in better patient comfort in my opinion. Experience, care, and attention to detail also are important to giving every patient the best treatment possible.”

Dr. Salemy is a graduate of Yale University Medical School and is an ABMS Board Certified Plastic Surgery. He serves as a clinical instructor for the University of Washington’s Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery, and has been awarded the title of “Seattle’s Best Plastic Surgeon” twice.
