There will be 231,840 women diagnosed with breast cancer before the end of 2015, according to the American Cancer Society. Nearly 60% will decide to have breast reconstruction. The women who opt out are often tired of surgeries, or hear stories from others who had issues. Some women wait years before they decide reconstruction is for them. Others, usually women over 50, may not undergo reconstruction at all.
Dr. Shahram Salemy, honored as “One of America’s Top Plastic Surgeons” by Consumer’s Research Council of America says “…[breast reconstruction] is not a one-size-fits-all issue.” While some women are perfectly happy without surgery, reconstruction does help cancer survivors reclaim their healthy physical profile. Women feel confident in their appearance, which translates to a positive attitude as they embrace futures as survivors.
A healthy lifestyle is key after diagnosis. Exercise is important for cancer survivors. Reconstruction can help survivors feel more comfortable in workout clothing or swimsuits. When women continue this track of positive recovery, they can potentially lower their risk for future health issues.
Choosing to undergo reconstruction is best started by meeting with an experienced surgeon who understands the emotional and physical post-mastectomy process. Dr. Salemy feels his goal for every survivor is for them to feel safe and comfortable so they have a positive experience for years to come.
“Some women want reconstruction right away, others wait years before deciding to move forward, some never do.” Dr. Salemy continues, “The important thing for us as surgeons is to acknowledge their concerns and goals, and let our patients know that many different options are perfectly acceptable.” The 2014 Seattle Magazine Best Plastic Surgeon sums it up best, “As plastic surgeons, we will be here, ready to help, if and when our patients are ready.”
Dr. Salemy is a distinguished graduate of Yale Medical School. He is a Clinical Instructor at The University of Washington’s Department of Surgery, where he trains chief residents of plastic surgery in cosmetic surgery procedures.
