Three-dimensional liposculpture presents a safe, reliable method for body contouring of the hips, flanks and thighs, according to a recent paper published in PRS Global Open, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ international open access journal. The paper reviewed 20 years of procedures involving more than 4000 patients.
Plastic surgery incorporates an ever-expanding array of surgical techniques that are designed to improve or repair an area of the body, offering patients who undergo it firmer, healthier appearances and improved self-confidence. Liposculpture, also known as liposuction, refers to surgical techniques that remove fat and contour a specific area of the body to create a leaner, more proportional appearance.
After evaluating both the methods used and the results achieved, researchers determined that 3D liposculpture procedures that combine the removal of fat from the lower body with techniques that promote and guide the retraction of the skin allow plastic surgeons to craft the contours of the hips, flanks and thighs for satisfying results that last even in patients who later experience weight gains or pregnancies. The procedure is also very safe; out of the 4000 patients, only one experienced a serious complication in the form of an infection that responded to antibiotics.
“This paper illustrates how like any other cosmetic surgery procedure, liposuction requires proper patient selection, planning and execution, and it is best performed by a board certified plastic surgeon who has experience with the procedure,” says Dr. Shahram Salemy, an award-winning plastic surgeon from the Seattle area. “This combination usually leads to very good results, low complication rates and what we all ultimately want — a very happy patient.”
A board certified plastic surgeon and a clinical instructor at the University of Washington’s Division of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Salemy uses cutting-edge techniques and customized treatment plans to provide his patients with excellent results.
