Underrated & Amazing: Five Plastic Surgery Procedures No One Talks About

5 underrated plastic surgery procedures

As a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Seattle for over two decades, I have seen firsthand how certain transformative procedures remain under the radar despite their remarkable ability to boost confidence and deliver natural, beautiful results. While popular plastic surgeries like breast implants and liposuction often command the conversation, today I want to highlight five underrated procedures: lip lifts, fat transfer to the midface, nipple reduction, areolar reduction, and labiaplasty. Each of these addresses specific aesthetic concerns with precision and artistry, yet they rarely receive the attention they deserve.

Lip Lifts: Subtle, Sophisticated Rejuvenation

The lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and the upper lip, creating a more defined cupid’s bow and a youthful, balanced smile. For example, a lip lift can address specific aesthetic concerns such as a thin upper lip or an elongated philtrum, providing a more harmonious facial appearance. Unlike fillers, which add volume, a lip lift actually elevates the lip, enhancing dental show and vermilion height for a naturally refreshed look.

In a 2021 survey conducted by the world’s largest association of facial plastic surgeons Lip lifts were performed by seven out of 10 doctors, which highlights a growing popularity of longer-lasting and more natural-looking results.

Fat Transfer to the Midface: Restore Youthful Volume

Aging often leads to volume loss in the cheeks and midface, resulting in hollowing, sagging, and deepened folds. Fat transfer, or fat grafting, involves harvesting a patient’s own fat (usually from the abdomen or thighs) and injecting it into the midface to restore lost volume and improve skin texture. This technique is especially powerful when combined with a midface lift, which repositions sagging tissues while the fat transfer replenishes youthful contours.

The dual approach not only addresses structural changes but also delivers harmonious, natural-looking results that last for years. Industry research supports fat grafting as a safe and effective option, with the added benefit of using the patient’s own tissue, reducing the risk of allergic reactions or rejection. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 102,750 fat grafting procedures to the face, breast, and buttocks were performed in 2018, highlighting the popularity and growing acceptance of fat transfer for facial rejuvenation.

Nipple Reduction: Confidence in Every Detail

Nipple reduction surgery is designed for patients who feel their nipples are projecting or overly long. The procedure involves the removal of excess tissue to decrease the height and/or width of the nipple, resulting in a more balanced and proportionate appearance.

While not often discussed, this procedure can have a profound impact on self-esteem, especially for those who feel self-conscious in certain clothing or intimate situations. Research indicates that patient satisfaction is high, and complications are rare when performed by an experienced, board-certified surgeon.

Areolar Reduction: Subtle Refinement for Symmetry

Areolar reduction addresses concerns about the size or shape of the pigmented area surrounding the nipple. The procedure is straightforward: a circular incision is made, excess tissue is removed, and the new, smaller areola is sutured in place. The surgery is usually completed in about an hour, and patients go home the same day.

Enlarged areolas can result from genetics, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes. Areolar reduction offers a safe, effective way to achieve symmetry and proportion, with minimal downtime and lasting results.

Labiaplasty: Comfort and Confidence

Labiaplasty is a highly individualized procedure for women that reshapes the labia minora or majora, addressing concerns such as discomfort, irritation, or dissatisfaction with appearance. The surgery involves removing excess tissue and sculpting the area for a more balanced, comfortable result.

The surgery can be carried out under light sedation or general anesthesia, based on the patient’s preference and the complexity of the procedure.Recovery is typically swift, with most patients returning to normal activities at 6 weeks. Industry research confirms that labiaplasty is associated with high satisfaction rates and significant improvements in quality of life.

These underrated procedures can offer powerful yet subtle ways to enhance your natural beauty and self-assurance. With the right expertise and a personalized approach, they can deliver results that are both transformative and harmonious.

Single or Combined Procedures?

Many plastic surgery treatments, including lip lifts, are commonly performed as standalone procedures but are also frequently combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as rhinoplastyfacelifts, or eyelid rejuvenation to achieve a more balanced and rejuvenated appearance. Combining procedures is a popular choice because it allows patients to address multiple aesthetic concerns in a single surgical session, resulting in only one period of downtime and recovery rather than separate ones for each procedure. This approach is not only more efficient and convenient, but it also helps minimize the overall impact on daily life and can be more cost-effective, as patients prepare for and recover from just one surgical event, rather than scheduling and healing from multiple surgeries at different times.

Board Certification Matters

If you’re considering any of these treatments, I encourage you to consult with a board-certified surgeon who understands your goals and prioritizes your safety. In plastic surgery there’s only one board certification that matters: the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). ABPS board certification signifies that your surgeon has completed a rigorous training process, encompassing at least six years of surgical training post-medical school. Additionally, they have successfully passed comprehensive written and oral examinations and engage in continuous education to remain informed about the latest advancements and safety standards in the field. This commitment ensures they consistently provide the highest level of care to their patients.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon is an essential first step in developing a treatment plan that truly aligns with your aesthetic goals. During your consultation, you’ll have the opportunity to clearly communicate what you hope to achieve, discuss your motivations, and share any specific concerns or desired outcomes. In our office we will also conduct a thorough review of your medical history and perform a physical examination, which allows us assess your unique anatomy and determine your suitability for various procedures.

Altogether it’s a collaborative process that helps ensure your treatment plan is not only tailored to your individual features and expectations but also prioritizes your safety and well-being. Our teamwork can make the dream work of pursuing the refined, confident look you deserve, guided by experience, artistry, and the highest standards of patient care.

Safety-Accredited Surgical Center

When considering any plastic surgery your safety and results depend not only on your surgeon’s expertise but also on the standards of the facility where your procedure is performed. This is why I strongly emphasize the importance of choosing a safety-certified surgical facility.

The “gold standard” for outpatient surgical safety in the U.S. is accreditation by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), which certifies a facility is in strict compliance with rigorous patient care, staff qualifications, equipment, and emergency preparedness standards. Selecting an AAAASF-certified facility ensures your procedure is performed in an environment that prioritizes safety, comfort, and consistent quality.

Ultimately, pairing an ABPS board-certified plastic surgeon with an AAAASF-accredited facility is the best way to ensure a safe, successful, and satisfying plastic surgery experience, no matter how simple or specialized the procedure.

While mainstream procedures dominate conversations about cosmetic enhancement, the transformative power of underrated surgeries like lip lifts, midface fat transfers, nipple and areolar reductions, and labiaplasty lies in their precision and ability to harmonize natural beauty with individualized goals. These hidden gems of plastic surgery offer not just physical aesthetic enhancement but also a boost in self-confidence, showcasing that some of the most significant transformations come from refined details.
