Thinking about plastic surgery? Whether you’re ready to book or just starting to explore your options, it’s important to know if you’re a good candidate, and we’re here to help you figure that out in a friendly, judgment-free way.
First Things First: Why Do You Want This?
One of the most important questions to ask yourself is why you want the procedure. The best reason? You’re doing it for you, not to meet anyone else’s expectations. Common and totally valid reasons we hear all the time:
- “I want my appearance to reflect how I feel inside.”
- “I want to boost my self-confidence.”
- “I’m ready to get my pre-baby body back.”
- “I’ve worked hard to lose weight and I’m ready for the final step.”
If any of these resonate with you, you’re already thinking in the right direction.
Lifestyle Check: Smoking & Medications
Do you smoke or use nicotine products (including vaping)? You’ll need to press pause at least 6 weeks before and after surgery. Smoking can slow down healing and increase the risk of complications, and we want your recovery to be smooth and stress-free.
Also, if you’re taking GLP-1 or weight loss medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Trulicity®, or Mounjaro®, you’ll need to stop 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery. These medications can affect your weight, and a stable weight is key for long-lasting results.
Speaking of Weight Stability…
Have you been at a steady weight for at least 6 months? If so, great! That’s ideal for surgery planning. Significant weight changes before or after your procedure can affect the final outcome, so consistency is key.
Age-Related Pre-Surgery Requirements
Breast Procedures: If you’re over 40, you’ll need a mammogram before surgery. It’s a quick step to help ensure your safety and peace of mind.
All Other Procedures: If you’re over 50, medical clearance from your primary care provider is required. This helps us make sure you’re in good overall health and ready for surgery.
Timing Is Everything
When are you hoping to have your procedure? Some surgeons book out months in advance (we know, waiting can be hard!). But think of it this way: people plan vacations a year out. Why not do the same for surgery? Planning ahead gives you time to get everything in order: your recovery, your schedule, and most importantly, your mindset.
If you’re considering plastic surgery, make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons, you’re in good health, and you’re ready to follow your surgeon’s pre- and post-op guidance. Your dream results are possible with the right timing and preparation!
