Rising Trend: Surgery After Ozempic Weight Loss

The Ozempic Craze Has Taken the Wellness and Weight Loss World by Storm.

DrSalemy.com Tummy Tuck 7 Years After

Originally developed as a medication for type 2 diabetes, Ozempic (semaglutide) has gained widespread attention for its remarkable side effect: significant weight loss. This injectable drug works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, reduce appetite, and slow down digestion. As a result, patients not only achieve better blood sugar control but also experience a substantial decrease in body weight.

Celebrities and influencers have fueled the buzz around Ozempic, sharing their impressive weight loss journeys on social media. This has led to a surge in demand, with many people seeking cosmetic surgery procedures after weight loss.

Many are looking to continue to refine their weight loss results with a variety of facial plastic surgery, body contouring treatments, and other plastic surgery. For example, tummy tucks (abdominoplasties) can specifically target loose skin left behind after significant weight loss. These procedures can address lingering stretch marks and create a smoother, tighter abdomen, which can perfectly complement any Ozempic weight loss success story. One really nice bonus is that the results of tummy tuck surgery can hold up very nicely, even after many years, as shown here in the Before and After case photo taken 7 years after our patient’s tummy tuck surgery. (For this patient, the results after 7 years are still very similar to the results seen shortly after her surgery.)

Before undergoing any plastic surgery after weight loss, you’ll want to be mindful of a few important considerations that will help you get a positive outcome.

Here are a few tips regarding weight levels, balancing diets rich in nutrition, and what you can do to help ensure your safety and a smooth recovery.

Dr. Salemy’s Top Three Tips for Cosmetic Surgery After Weight Loss

Tip #1: Before undergoing surgery, it is crucial for patients to reach a stable and consistent weight. This stability helps ensure optimal healing and enhances the longevity of the surgical results. Achieving and maintaining a steady weight before surgery can also minimize potential complications, promoting a smoother recovery and more sustainable outcomes.

Tip #2: Focus on a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients to support healing and recovery. Consider consulting a nutritionist to ensure you’re meeting your body’s needs, particularly if you’ve experienced rapid weight loss.

Tip #3: For your safety and to ensure the best possible outcomes, we require patients to discontinue the use of Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications at least six weeks before and after surgery. These medications can interfere with anesthesia, potentially leading to complications during the procedure. By pausing their use, we can help ensure a smoother surgical experience and more effective recovery process. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen.
